A multi-million pound scheme to ease congestion on one of the area’s busiest roads went on show this weekend.
Kent County Council wants to make changes to the A206 St Clements Way between Greenhithe and Dartford which provides links to the A2 and Dartford Crossing and access to Bluewater and the Crossways business park.
The plans would see the roundabout in St Clements Way and London Road enlarged to increase capacity at the junction and improvements made to the Crossways Boulevard roundabout.
If the plans go ahead, a new northbound bus lane would be provided between London Road roundabout and Steele Avenue and an additional traffic lane between Steele Avenue and the Crossways Boulevard roundabout. New traffic signals are proposed at the Steele Avenue junction, which will include priority signals for the bus lane to allow buses to move across to the offside lane to access Greenhithe Station.
An additional traffic lane would be provided on the southbound approach to the London Road roundabout while the existing path along St Clements Way between London Road and Mounts Road will be widened and converted to a shared foot and cycleway.
The existing pedestrian crossings would be upgraded with signal equipment and the westbound pedestrian crossing outside Asda would be moved a short distance to improve visibility of the crossing.
The existing informal crossings in St Clements Way would be removed, noise reduction fencing provided and the landscaping enhanced.
Information on the construction phasing and traffic management proposals is on display at The Royal British Legion Social Club, London Road, Greenhithe, between 1pm and 5pm today (Thursday) and at St Mary’s church hall, London Road, Greenhithe, on Saturday between 1.30pm and 4pm.
Jackson Civil Engineering Group, appointed as the construction contractor for the project, will be carrying out advance works during November and December including digging trial holes to locate buried utility pipes and equipment.
There will be site clearance works within the King Edward Road compound in preparation for the installation of the site offices while the trial holes will generally be located away from the main road, avoiding the need for lane closures.
