Five girls have raised more than £3,000 for a charity.

Bonnie O'Brien, Ellen Jenkins, Charlotte Benson, Mia Pennington and Olivia Ray walked 25 miles from Erith to the London Eye to collect funds for Young Epilepsy.

The event was organised by Bonnie, 15, who goes to Mayfield Grammar School in Gravesend, whose eight-year-old brother was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was three years old.

She persuaded fellow pupils Ellen, 15, Charlotte, 15, and Mia, 15, and Dartford Grammar School pupil Olivia, 16, to join her in her fundraising efforts.

Young Epilepsy supports young people and their families living with the illness.

The team set off early on April 24 and after nearly 12 hours of walking along the Thames Path, they arrived at the London Eye.

They were spurred on with social media support and their parents who took it in turns to arrive at various checkpoints with refreshments.

Bonnie, who already had blistered feet having done several practice walks with the girls ahead of the challenge, was quite clear at the finish: "I will never run a marathon."

But with strength restored she's already considering the team's next challenge.

"We were so bored during lockdown and wanted something worthwhile to do," she added.

"So I got the idea of doing something to support this charity which is so close to my heart."

Ellen said: "I'm so glad to have been able to take part. It was such a great experience and I can't thank everyone enough for all their support and donations."

Bonnie's mum, Emma, said: "We are so incredibly proud of them all, and so pleased Bonnie's friends supported her whacky idea. What an amazing achievement for them."

The group raised £2,767 via online donations and collected hundreds more in cash.
