Praise for two Asda Greenhithe workers after leaping into action to help customer suffering heart attack

Two quick-thinking supermarket workers have been praised after coming to the aid of a man suffering a heart attack.

Aimee Shaxted and Jo Robb, from Asda’s Greenhithe shop in Crossways Boulevard, rushed to help the customer after he collapsed in the store.

The pair then looked after him until paramedics arrived to take him to hospital.

Jo, the store’s fresh trading manager, said: “A customer alerted Aimee that a man had collapsed and she called me.

“The gentleman was on the floor and had chest pains and his face was very grey. He said he thought he may be having a panic attack, but I immediately decided to call 999.

”Aimee put him in the W first-aid position and, while we waited for an ambulance to arrive, we just chatted with him to keep him calm and distracted.

“Paramedics then hooked him up to check his pulse and that and said they needed to take him to hospital as he was having a heart attack.”

The man, who is in his 50s, has now had a stent - a small, expandable tube that is inserted into a blood vessel or duct to keep it open - fitted and is recovering well.

Jo says he’s been back to the store a few times since the incident which happened last month.

“It was so nice to see him,” she added. “He was very grateful.

“The hospital said to him that he was lucky that he was shopping in Asda when it happened rather than him being on his own at home as the outcome might have been very different.

It was quite scary at the time, but I'm glad that we were able to help

She said: “I am extremely proud of how Aimee and Jo handled a difficult situation and one that had them both thinking on their feet and realising it was an emergency.

”They both stepped up and supported each other. It was only when the ambulance arrived that they were told that the customer was having a heart attack, but it never fazed them and they stayed and supported the customer until help arrived.

”Jo and Aimee are just one great example of the star colleagues we have working in our business and how much we care for our customers.”
