Backers of north Kent's white horse are stuck in the starting blocks as the cost of the project soars, the Messenger can reveal.

Commissioners of the Ebbsfleet Landmark scheme are struggling to raise the cash for the 50-metre sculpture after its projected cost rose to £10 million.

Sponsors of the creation, designed by Mark Wallinger, originally estimated the artwork, due to appear in a field beside the A2 near Ebbsfleet International, would cost about £2 million.
