Family lawyer Elizabeth Jones, who polled more than 20% in Dartford in May’s general election, has been voted into one of Ukip's top spots.

Members voted her onto Ukip’s National Executive Committee, the party’s central power-broking body.

She was up against 42 others in the national ballot. She will take up her seat, one of the top four on the body, next month (December) for three years.

She vowed to clean up the “stale corners” of her party.

She said: “I am very grateful to all those Ukip members who voted for me and I now intend to introduce some fresh air to the stale corners of the party.

“I want much needed change and a fresh broom. I believe in rewarding merit, not time-serving and political correctness.

“I take my responsibilities fully to heart and look forward to a thoroughly good Augean stables clear-out.”

She currently practices family law in south London, also working for eight years in Dartford, where she rode regularly in Joydens Wood.

In May's election, she was the first female candidate to stand for any political party in the Dartford seat for the past 18 years, and the first for a national party since Margaret Thatcher in 1951.
