Lorry driver bailed after vehicle strikes bridge on A20 near Swanley

The driver of a lorry who was arrested after his vehicle hit a bridge yesterday has been bailed by police.

Police were called to the London-bound carriageway of the A20 near Swanley at about 12.37pm after the vehicle struck the bridge between Junction 3 of the M25 and Junction 1 of the M20.

Officers revealed the driver, A 51-year-old man from Bromley, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst unfit through drugs and dangerous driving.

Traffic was being held by police for several hours as the emergency services, including the fire service deal with the incident.

Highways officers were also at the scene and no one was injured.

However, the structure had been left damaged and debris could be seen the road from the lorry which lost its digger arm and bucket.

The A20 was closed in both directions between the junctions with the M25 and A223 Crittals Corner.

The road reopened fully at 8.07pm.

It also caused major delays on the A2 as motorists avoid the area on their journey home to Kent from London.

This morning police revealed the driver had been released pending further investigation.
