Police issue warning to drivers to stay safe in the wet weather after tailgating on the M25 near Swanley

Police officers were in disbelief after they spotted a car tailgating on the motorway in the pouring rain.

They have issued a warning to drivers telling them to leave more space to brake, especially in extreme weather conditions.

This morning, the Roads Policing Unit spotted a car on the M25 near Swanley driving nearly nose-to-tail with the vehicle in front.

Officers tweeted: "The driver of our unmarked car couldn't believe that this driver was sitting so close to the car in front.

"That's less than one car length in the wet.

"Driver dealt with for tailgating."

In a hashtag they warned drivers "you need more time to brake when the road is a lake".

Road conditions are likely to remain poor as the wet weather is set to continue into Monday.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for most of the Kent coast.
