Queues at Dartford Crossing leading to traffic on M25 anticlockwise from Orpington to Dartford Tunnels

A crash caused further traffic woes after massive queues built up for seven miles approaching the Dartford Crossing.

At the height of the congestion, it was estimated to be taking more than an hour on the anticlockwise M25 to get through the tunnels.

Jams were backing up as far as junction 4 for Orpington.

The earlier congestion was not caused by a crash but severe weight of traffic getting across the Thames ahead of the weekend.

But two lanes approaching the left-hand tunnel were closed, with vehicles being redirected through the east tunnel between J1a at Dartford and J31 for Lakeside.

The incident was cleared shortly before 4.30pm and all lanes have been reopened.

A broken down vehicle was also reported on the approach to the tunnels, according to Traffic England.
