Teenager charged with attempted murder

A TEENAGER has been charged with the attempted murder of a Kent Police sergeant.

Sgt Mark Stewart, 38, was hit by a car he had attempted to stop in Lowfield Street, Dartford.

He was taken to Darent Valley Hospital with serious leg, chest and pelvic injuries and underwent surgery on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred just after midnight on Sunday opposite Barclays Bank. Parts of Lowfield Street were sealed off for more than two hours while forensic experts combed the area.

A doorman at the nearby nightclub 3D, who did not want to be named, said it took 15 minutes for an ambulance to reach the sergeant after queues of traffic built up.

Sgt Stewart is married and has been with Kent Police for 13 years.

Robert Fletcher, 18, from Welling, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated taking of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified and with no insurance, assaulting an arresting officer and obstructing a police investigation.

He was due to appear before Dartford Magistrates today, Monday.

Another two men are being quizzed by police in connection with the incident.
