A Pride flag was stolen from a park overnight, marking the second consecutive year the symbol of inclusivity has been targeted in the town.
The theft was discovered in Swanscombe Park, off Park Road, this morning (June 10) by park wardens and has been reported to police.
Swanscombe town councillor Claire Pearce says she understands the Pride flag is the only one repeatedly targeted in the community having also been stolen last year.
She said: “This is the only flag that ever gets targeted in our community.
“We proudly fly the Pride flag every year as a symbol of inclusion.
“The fact this has happened again is absolutely shocking.”
The Labour councillor said the damaged caused was costly and has left the flagpole damaged.
“It’s not just the cost of replacing the flag, which is £250 each time,” she added.
“The way it’s being ripped down also damages the flagpole.
“We can’t fly other flags until it’s repaired, and that comes from public funds.”
A replacement Pride flag has already been ordered, but it may be some time before any flag can be flown again due to the damage.
Cllr Pearce added: “The ignorant attitude shown by whoever is doing this is costing our community money.
“We are a proud and inclusive community, and this behaviour is disgraceful.
“It should not be happening.”
No other flags flown by the council have been targeted, raising fears the theft may be motivated by prejudice.
“We have to call this what it is,” said Cllr Pearce. “The people doing it should be ashamed of themselves.”
Officers have confirmed the incident is under investigation and are urging people to come forward.
