Ebbsfleet Academy pupils raise funds for UNICEF with football match

By Uju Duru

Year seven and eight students from The Ebbsfleet Academy completed the academy’s first UNICEF Soccer Aid Playground Challenge last week.

The event was organised, on Friday June 14, to help participating schools design obstacle courses and raised funds to help children everywhere grow up healthy, happy and able to play.

It was kicked off with a penalty shoot-out, with students learning how to take a penalty like a pro and teachers playing the position of goalkeeper.

Students then took part in a "crossbar challenge", attempting to strike the ball from the halfway line onto the crossbar - and the feat was incredibly achieved by Santiago Rodriguez Torcatt from Year eight on his first attempt.

This was followed by the ‘beat the goalie’ challenge, cricket-football and rounders-football before all students were put into their house teams to compete in ‘The Ebbsfleet Academy Playground Soccer Aid Tournament’.

Ms Jade Hartley, PE teacher for The Ebbsfleet Academy said: “We have had a great turnout for our first UNICEF Soccer Aid Playground Challenge. Students showed great sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

“A massive thank you to all the students involved in the UNICEF Soccer Aid Playground Challenge, who have raised nearly £500, which will be matched by the UK government, doubling the difference to children’s lives.”

Recognising the efforts of the students’ to make a difference in the lives of other children, Ebbsfleet United Football Club donated a ‘player of the match’ prize, and a family game ticket to any match next season.

Ellie George, player of the match, said: “Kicking a football is something me and my friends take for granted, its good to know that by playing football today we’ve helped children who can’t play to play. I’m looking forward to taking my family along to support Ebbsfleet United Football Club”
