Charlton 3 Walsall 1 match report

Charlton maintained their League 1 play-off push with victory over Walsall on Saturday.

The Addicks needed two goals in the last 20 minutes to see off a Walsall team, who hit back to level the scores in the first half.

The win keeps Charlton sixth in the table, two points ahead of Rotherham.

The only noteworthy action of the opening 25 minutes saw Charlton skipper Chris Solly booked on his return to the team for taking out Tyler Roberts as he broke from the halfway line.

The first shot on goal saw Walsall keeper Liam Roberts do well to turn behind Josh Magennis' low effort for a corner.

Charlton took the lead just after the half-hour when Mark Marshall delivered from the left wing and Joe Aribo nonchalantly slotted beyond Roberts on the volley.

It was Aribo's third league goal of the season, all of them coming in the last four matches at The Valley.

It was nearly 2-0 when Stephy Mavididi's blockbuster came crashing back off the crossbar and it was to prove a pivotal moment as Walsall finally woke up before the break.

Tyler Roberts and Erhun Oztumer both went close before Luke Leahy's delightful left-wing cross was nodded in by the unmarked Oztumer in the 41st minute.

Both sides had chances at the start of the second half.

it needed an excellent last-gasp interception by Ezri Konsa to deny Walsall a tap-in before Joe Edwards fired the follow-up against the woodwork.

Then Charlton should have led but Magennis could only shoot straight at keeper Liam Roberts after being sent clean through by Ben Reeves, who was replaced shortly after by Tariqe Fosu.

Brilliant play in midfield by Walsall's Tyler Roberts saw him send Amadou Bakayoko clean through midway through the half but Amos managed to divert his low shot behind for a corner.

Within two minutes, Charlton were nearly ahead but Magennis headed Marshall's near-post corner against the upright.

The Addicks went ahead on 72 minutes when Mavididi used his pace to get beyond centre-back Kory Roberts, and the Walsall defender could only divert the ball into his own net as he tried to get back to clear the danger.

Marshall blazed over for Charlton, who looked more likely to get a third as Walsall struggled to conjure up much in the closing stages.

That goal duly came in the 89th minute when Malvididi burst into the penalty area and slotted in at the near post to get a deserved goal.
