Historic Formula 1 drama at Brands Hatch as Yutaka Toriba crashes in Masters Racing Legends

Historic Formula 1 racer Yutaka Toriba swept to victory at Brands Hatch - before his event ended in the barriers.

The Williams FW07C pilot beat polesitter Matt Wrigley (Tyrrell 011) to triumph in the first Masters Racing Legends contest on Sunday.

But he crashed his ex-Alan Jones machine out of the second event at Clearways while chasing the leading McLaren M29 of Kiwi Warren Briggs.

The incident brought the race to an early finish as the Japanese racer’s car was recovered from the gravel, with Briggs declared the winner ahead of Wrigley.

The event marked the 19th running of the Masters Historic Festival on the 2.4-mile Grand Prix circuit, with 16 Formula 1 cars entered in two 25-minute contests.

In the support races, Dartford’s Luke Reade raced a GT3 car for the first time in the Masters GT Trophy.

Sharing a Lamborghini Gallardo with Neil Glover, the pair finished fourth and second in the two 40-minute events.

Reade, who said he was “grinning ear to ear all weekend long,” lapped quicker than Scott Sport teammate Aaron Scott - a long-time sportscar racer who finished second in class at Le Mans in 2017.
