The third running of Super Touring Power at Brands Hatch was hailed a great success as Honda and Vauxhall came out on top.
A 16-car grid including six entries shipped from New Zealand was assembled for the two-day meeting, which used both Grand Prix and Indy configurations.
Historics star Michael Lyons won Saturday’s only race in a Honda Accord, before former BTCC racer Jason Hughes doubled up in Sunday’s Indy circuit encounters, piloting a Vauxhall Vectra from 2000.
Stuart Caie, chairman of the Classic Touring Car Racing Club (CTCRC), which organised the event alongside MotorSport Vision (MSV), said the meeting was “absolutely brilliant”.
The 46-year-old piloted a Vauxhall Cavalier in the headline Super Tourers category, which also included BTC-specification cars.
“We revisit the 1990s to try and create a retro event,” Caie said.
“And you can see from the crowds that it’s been a great weekend.
“You look out on Southbank, and it’s packed, which is how it used to be when I was a kid.
“So hopefully we’ll get the chance to continue this.”
Bexley-based Caie, who has been racing for 15 years, said plans for next season are yet to be confirmed.
“We’re not entirely sure what’s going to happen, or where it’s going to go, or what we’re going to do,” he said.
“Brands have got some other events on which require time on the Grand Prix circuit next year. But I think it would be a shame to not do it again.
“Whatever form that may look like, I don’t know, but it would be a shame to just stop doing it.”
Caie, 46, said the event could be rested at Brands Hatch next year before returning to West Kingsdown in 2027.
“Maybe we could do that just to keep people hungry for it a little bit,” he said.
“When it becomes year in, year out, it just becomes repetitive. I don’t want that. I want to try and keep it special.
“Maybe we do it at a different race event and then bring it back to Brands, and swap them around.”
MSV group motorsport event manager David Willey said his team will be working with CTCRC at Brands Hatch again.
“I’m sure we’re going to do something touring-car related next year, but we have this conversation after every Super Touring event about what to do next,” he said.
“We’ve had three so far, and we look forward to doing many more events together with CTCRC.
“We’ve just got so many ideas at the moment, and they’ve got great content, so there are so many possibilities.
“They’ve got amazing cars, great support, and the racing is so close.”
Willey said he is “amazed how many people still fondly remember” the Super Touring period, which ran from 1991 to 2000.
“There’s a team of us at Brands who love touring cars, and if you’re a fan of touring cars, this is the sort of event you’d create,” he said.
“The weather’s been fantastic, and it’s been great to see all the fans enjoying all of the racing, and seeing the Super Tourers.
“We’re blessed in this country to have club racing like this, so it deserves a high profile for all the fans to see and enjoy.”
Platts Heath’s Jake Hill had dominated the first two editions of the event, taking six victories aboard Laurent Aiello's 1999 title-winning Nissan Primera in the Super Tourer class.
But car owner Richard Wheeler pulled his entries from last year’s meeting following a heavy crash involving touring car legend Steve Soper, and did not return at the weekend.
That meant Hill was left without a drive, so the reigning BTCC champion instead headed to Glastonbury Festival on a rare weekend off.
In his absence, four-time BTCC champion Colin Turkington claimed pole position by 1.6 seconds on Saturday morning, driving Hughes’s Vauxhall on the Grand Prix loop.
The Northern Irishman - Hill’s former BMW team-mate - was more than 10 seconds clear of the field in the first race when front-right suspension forced him to retire on lap nine of 12, handing Lyons the win.
On Sunday, Turkington and Hughes swapped cars, allowing the latter to twice get the better of Lyons on the Indy circuit.
Turkington took fourth and fifth-place finishes in a slower BTC-spec MG ZS.
Brands Hatch hosts HSCC Legends of Brands Hatch Superprix on July 12-13, with adult tickets for Sunday costing £23 in advance or £27 on the gate. Children under 13 go free. Click here for more details.
