Welling United manager Jamie Coyle on postponed match against Bath City

Welling manager Jamie Coyle had no complaints after their Good Friday home game with Bath was postponed less than 10 minutes before kick-off.

Referee Rob Whitton passed the pitch playable at 2pm and both teams warmed up without any issues at Park View Road.

But a further inspection before kick-off saw the official change his mind and postpone the game despite the best efforts of groundsman Barry Hobbins.

“It’s disappointing but I understand the referee’s decision,” said Coyle. “He’s looked at the safety and if he has any concerns then the game has to cancelled.

“The forecast was that it would carry on raining. The pitch was quite firm but the real concern was the top goalmouth, it’s getting boggy and the referee lost his footing when he checked it.

“It was always going to get worse. Barry has worked tirelessly since 7am with the roller to get the rain off.

“It’s the first time in my career that a game has been called off just before 3pm.”

Welling will hope to resume National League South action at Hampton on Monday and Coyle quickly got a late scouting mission in on their opponents after making the short trip down to Princes Park.

“It’s disappointing as we’re on a great run,” he added. “We’ve won eight out of 11 so we’re on a really good run, it’s unfortunate as you want to carry on that momentum.

“At least we’ll be fresh on Monday and hopefully the weather improves. You can’t do anything about it and we’ll prepare right for Monday now.”

With striker Adam Coombes on form since rejoining the Wings from Sutton and on-loan Millwall forward Jamie Philpot forcing his way into the side, Welling have plenty of firepower going into the final month of the season.

“Jamie has five in six games, Coombes has four in four,” noted Coyle. “In the final third we’re a real threat at the moment.

“It’s so different now when you’re on the pitch, even if we’re not playing that well it seems like we’ve got another gear we can go up.

“With Coombes, Bradley (Goldberg) and Jamie they are always going to cause problems for teams.”
