Welling 3 St Albans 1 match report

Welling reignited their National League South play-off ambitions with a convincing second-half display over St Albans on Saturday.

Goals from Bradley Goldberg, Jack Parkinson and Jamie Philpot led them to victory at Park View Road.

The visitors had taken the lead early in the second half through a David Noble spot-kick.

Parkinson sent an early header wide for the Wings before a good block at the other end by Callum Driver denied Zane Banton following Sam Merson's assist.

Parkinson was booked for a foul on Rhys Murrell-Williamson, who proved St Albans' best attacking outlet in the first half.

On-loan Millwall forward Philpot proved a lively presence up front for Welling. Percy Kiangebeni was booked for taking him out 25 yards from goal but Jack Jebb curled the free-kick well over the bar.

St Albans enjoyed the majority of the play but their reluctance to shoot meant keeper Bailey Vose was largely untroubled.

Welling nearly went ahead on the stroke of half-time but a fine counter attack involving Philpot, Goldberg and Jebb saw the latter fire into the side netting.

There was no shortage of action at the start of the second half. Goldberg was denied by St Albans keeper Dean Snedker, who did well to turn behind his low shot on 47 minutes.

Within two minutes a rash challenge by Welling's Ryan Hall on Murrell-Williamson handed St Albans a penalty which skipper Noble tucked away despite appearing to stop in his run-up.

But Welling's response was immediate and they were level within a minute. Goldberg showed neat footwork in the area before producing a powerful left-foot finish into the top corner.

Philpot got the goal he deserved with 19 minutes left thanks to the unselfish Goldberg.

St Albans were caught too high again, and as Goldberg broke clear he squared to the supporting Philpot who was able to score into an empty net.

Welling were slicing St Albans open with ease. They nearly added a fourth when Philpot set up Hall, whose shot was turned behind by Snedker.

St Albans made a triple change in a bid to get back into the game but one Murrell-Williamson header, which was cleared by Parkinson, apart they didn't create anything.
