A bungalows plan at Western Road, Deal would block emergency vehicles and add to parking woes residents fear

Neighbours are fighting a planned development, which they fear could block the movement of emergency vehicles.

Locals in Deal need to submit their comments to the council by this Friday.

The application is for three detached bungalows on land behind Western Road, Deal with parking and vehicular access.

Resident Matthew Palmer said in a written submission to Dover District Council's planning department: "The narrow entrance to the land would surely cause problems with access for emergency service vehicles and refuse collection lorries.

"There are already problems with parking on the narrow roads and more resident's vehicles would only add to this."

Neighbour Brian Turner wrote: "The only vehicle access to this development is via an unadopted road, which narrows to a cul-de-sac, which then narrows to an ancient footpath.

"This is used at school times as a footpath by parents and children accessing various local schools.

"There are already problems with parking on the narrow roads and more residents' vehicles would only add to this..."

"To have the traffic toing and froing in this congested area is both dangerous and irresponsible, an accident waiting to happen."

Deal Town Council has formally objected too, also worried about emergency vehicle access and pedestrian safety.

A written submission from the Deal Society also made this point and added: "The design of the bungalows is alien to this area of Deal which is also adjacent to the Nelson Street conservation area.

"The historic right of way, Paupers Alley, is compromised by the development.

"It is an important connection between the town centre and the North of Deal.

"Parking is also inadequate in a highly congested area."

The application is by Fishnet Buildings Limited of central London and the Mercury has contacted its application agents for a comment.

It is not yet know when the scheme will be voted on by the council's planning committee but the deadline for determination is September 9.

You can have your say on the Dover District Council web page searching for the application with the reference number 21/01113.
