Car crashes into moat of Deal Castle in Marine Road for the second time this year

An elderly man was rescued from a car which plummeted into the moat of Deal Castle.

The incident comes just weeks after another car plunged about 20ft into the moat in September.

The driver in today's crash was taken to hospital after being treated for a head injury. Fire crews cut open the roof and gave him first aid, before paramedics took over.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called just after 8.40am regarding a report a car had collided with a fence on Victoria Road, Deal and driven into the moat of Deal Castle.

"Patrols, Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended."

In September a black BMW ploughed through the railings landing in almost the same spot, while people were enjoying the Deal Food and Drink Festival.

It happened around 6.20pm and an air ambulance landed on the nearby beach. The man driving was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with neck pain.

His family claimed he swerved to avoid pedestrians in the road.

English Heritage’s maintenance team immediately put a temporary barrier in place to cover the 20m section of damaged cast iron railings and the car was later hoisted out by a crane.
