First-time buyers are being given a chance to get on the property ladder after a council snapped up seven new homes.
The new-build houses in the village of Sholden, near Deal, have been added to Dover District Council’s (DDC) housing stock.
The seven homes are part of a total of 60 that the authority is planning to buy this year to help people in the district acquire their own place.
Of the properties purchased by the council, five three-bedroom homes will be available to people through DDC's shared ownership scheme.
Shared ownership is a more affordable way to buy a house for those who would like to own their own home but can’t afford to do so on the open market.
DDC has also acquired two four-bedroom properties at the site to be let at affordable rent, which means tenants will pay less than the local market rate.
The homes were bought using funds from the council’s capital programme.
Cllr Pamela Brivio and DDC’s cabinet member for housing, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer these new homes under the shared ownership scheme to people who wish to own their own home but can’t afford today’s high property prices.
“As a council, we are working hard to deliver all types of homes to suit the needs of our communities, whether that’s homes for social rent, shared ownership or temporary accommodation for those facing homelessness.
“Nothing is as important as having a roof over your head and we are committed to growing our council house numbers so we can provide secure homes to our residents who need them.”
DDC says it will also deliver six homes in Easole Street, Nonington and eight in Military Road, Dover later this year.
The properties, which are under contract with developers, will be alongside further homes in Walmer and Sandwich which will be announced at a later date.
