Take part in cliff walk which recalls murder of two teenage sisters in Dover

One of East Kent’s most notorious crimes will be recalled during the White Cliffs Walking Festival, which starts tomorrow.

In 1856, just after the end of the Crimean War, two teenage sisters were murdered on the cliffs near Dover.

Caroline and Maria Back, who were 19 and 17 respectively, had lived in Albany Place, Dover. Their bodies were found in a hollow near the Valiant Sailor pub at Capel-le-Ferne, and Dedea Redaines was later hanged for the crime.

One of the walks in the walking festival is Crimean Crime Mystery, on Monday August 27, led by Barry O’Brien, a member of the history group Dover Tales.

The 6.2 mile walk will start at Albany Place to follow the cliffs, past where the sisters met their fate, to the Valiant Sailor.

It is one of 44 different walks during the festival, which will be opened at 10am tomorrow by Vanessa Griffiths, chief executive of The Ramblers, at the Bleriot Memorial just outside Dover, in a ceremony also attended by the Mayor of Dover, Cllr Sue Jones, and Dover & Deal MP Charlie Elphicke.

This will be the fifth year of the festival, organised by the White Cliffs Ramblers. The 44 walks range from short special interest or heritage walks of one or two miles to the 52 mile White Cliffs Challenge, put on by the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Eleven of the walks are new ones, and four have a new feature.

Bev Cussans, who chairs the festival’s organising committee, said: “The White Cliffs Walking Festival is as fresh as ever, with new walks, walks with new features and favourite walks with a new mix of people.

“Come and enjoy guided walks, led by experienced walk leaders, listen to informative walk guides and meet interesting like-minded people, and appreciate the beautiful scenery whilst gaining the benefits of a fulfilling exercise.”
