Donations needed to combat period poverty at schools in Deal, Dover and Sandwich

A young mum is calling for donations of sanitary products as she does her bit to tackle period poverty in Deal, Dover and Sandwich.

Christine Tonks, of Woodnesborough, has become the East Kent coordinator for the Red Box Project.

The national charity runs a box scheme providing sanitary products in schools, ensuring no female misses out on her education because of her period.

The 28 year-old, mum of two, said: "We help everyone from those who just need a spare one-off product to young women who find themselves financially or socially unable to get regular monthly products.

"It's so they never have to use rolled up toilet paper, old rags or even skip school all together.

"There's no judgement, no questions, it's just quietly there."

The boxes are stocked by the community and are already place at 10 locations in the district.

They include Goodwin Academy, Sandwich Technology School, Linwood Youth Centre, Warden House Primary School, Worth Primary School, Christ Church Academy, Astor College and Crosslinks Youth Club in Dover.

Ms Tonks added: "The aim is to provide a box to every secondary school and as many primary schools as possible.

"It does not cost schools anything to have a box. We do everything needed and top up when required.

"I'd love to hear from any teachers who would like a box at their school."

Donations can be sanitary towels, pantyliners and tampons - all must be individually wrapped. But items like new knickers for aged nine to 13 and ladies size 6-18, plus intimate wipes, roll on deodorants, new flannels, travel size body washes and small drawstring bags are also required.

Donations can be left at The Whitehouse salon in Victoria Road, Deal, UBeauty Salon in Broad Street, Deal, Weightwatchers meetings with Tracy in both Deal and Sandwich, Woodnesborough Village Hall and the Age Concern charity shop on the Guildhall Forecourt in Sandwich.

Ms Tonks is also offering talks on period poverty and the reason to support young women.
