Dover's Big Screen is taken down, piece by piece

Work has started today on dismantling the Big Screen in Dover's Market Square.

The screen was provided - free of charge - by the now-defunct London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games in the run-up to the 2012 Olympics.

Dover District Council agreed to have the screen after Canterbury turned it down.

Many people have said it was in the wrong place, but LOCOG insisted it had to go in the Market Square, so that is where it was put.

As well as televising Olympic events, the screen has also shown news and current affairs programmes, and there have been special events organised when operas have been beamed live from Covent Garden, and it was used for the World Cup football.

But with traffic passing nearby - and sometimes coming through the precinct - while programmes have been shown, it was not the most convenient or comfortable of locations.

With the cost of maintaining the screen passing to the local authority, and having been warned that it was going to be expensive and difficult to get spare parts, councillors decided that the time had come for it to go.

Part of the Market Square has been cordoned off while the work is carried out, and pedestrians are being diverted via Gaol Lane rather than King Street to gain access to the Market Square.
