Local good causes to share proceeds of community fair at Landmark Centre, Deal

One quick question about Christmas fairs that was posted on Facebook has morphed into buzzing plans to hold a community fete in Deal.

The event will take place tomorrow (Friday) between 3pm and 8pm at the Landmark Centre in the High Street.

It has been organised by Sherif Amin and Stephanie Henry and will boast a wealth of stalls, refreshments and entertainment – all in aid of Deal Autistic Club and a little boy who needs a specialised car seat to cater for his disability.

Mrs Henry said: “The community have been so kind and generous.

“Sherif asked people if they would like a community Christmas fair at the end of October and got 1,500 comments. So we tried to set up a committee and started a Facebook page to promote it.”

Since then, a wealth of stall-holders have made contact, saying they want to sell their wares and contribute to the fundraising for the two worthy causes.

There will be candyfloss and sweets, crafts, glitter tattoos, artisan breads, Christmas wreaths, and homemade goods such as tempting cakes and even natural treats for dogs sold by volunteers from Futures for Dogs, the local dog re-homing organisation.

Refreshments on sale include German hot dogs, barbecued pulled-pork rolls, teas, coffees and hot chocolates.

Mrs Henry added: “Twenty-six local causes were nominated to be in with the chance to receive the money, and a vote was held on line.”

As well as Deal Autistic Club, four-year-old Finley Smith, of Wingrove Hill, Whitfield, will be presented with a share of the cash.

Finley has severe brain damage, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and global development delay and needs full-time care and daily physiotherapy.

Mrs Henry added: “The event is being held in both rooms of the Landmark centre and is all being done voluntarily.

“The response to pleas for help and donations has been wonderful.

“Local business have donated money, goods and their time to help build the Santa’s grotto, and Deal mayor Cllr Adrian Friend and mayoress Tracy Carr along with their deputies will be helping out on the day.

There will be carol singers from the Landmark Show Choir, Stage Catz and The Deal Hoodeners.

A prize display of artwork by pupils at Sandown Primary and the Aspire and Bright Sparks Nurseries will go on show, and a winner will be chosen on the day.
