Meeting called to tackle Albert Road’s recurring problem of flooding

Flood-besieged Albert Road residents have been invited to attend a meeting with MP Charlie Elphicke to discuss the road’s drainage problem.

After last month’s flooding following heavy rainfall, the MP has called the meeting as a matter of urgency, inviting representatives from Southern Water and Kent County Council to attend too.

It will be on Friday, October 16 at 9am in Albert Road.

Gareth Jones of Albert Road, is a member of the newly set up Flood Forum on Facebook.

He said: “Residents have suffered recurring flooding problems for a number of years with the latest incident on September 22.

“Once again we endured sewer flooding causing damage to several properties.

“The proposed meeting will give us all the opportunity to seek clarification on the programme for maintenance of drains and the Golf Road pumping station, the current investigations being undertaken to determine the cause of the recent flooding and ensuring measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

“We would also like to understand how the two parties respond to flood warnings in order to plan for timely and effective action.

“We hope the council can assuage concerns regarding the ability of the existing drainage infrastructure to cope with recent and planned residential and commercial developments in and around Albert Road.”

Mr Elphicke has said the flooding in September, which was the fourth incident in recent times, is “totally unacceptable” and is urging residents to attend.

He said: “I have previously met with the Environment Agency, Kent County Council, Southern Water and Dover District Council to make the case for infrastructure improvements.

“Deal is a town on the rise and with more homes being built, it is important that we have the infrastructure in place to cope.

“We’ve had many promises. Yet clearly action to date has not been adequate. I am very disappointed that flooding has happened again and I hope residents will come and join the meeting.”
