Belgium haulage company Mattheeuws Transport applies for Dover lorry park ahead of Brexit

A haulage company is planning to build its own lorry park in Dover because of Brexit.

Mattheeuws Transport has branches in Belgium and Calais but say it is trying to plan ahead of March next year when the UK will officially leave the European Union.

If a planning application is successful, the private park will be built big enough for 59 lorries in Palmerston Road, Whitfield, in a bid to avoid disruption at the border.

A previous application for 300 spaced park was rejected after residents raised concerns over how it would affect the local area.

Eric Mattheeuws, chief executive of the firm said: “I am against Brexit. You don’t know how bad this is going to be for us.

"We’re preparing for the worst. Brexit could be an opportunity, but if you don’t get any help or information then what can you do?

"As a haulage company we’re going to have limited opportunities in the future."

The plan comes as fears of traffic chaos caused by Operation Stack, similar to those in 2015, grow as the UK gets closer to Brexit.
