Chemist burglar Chay Lenthall revealed identity by removing skeleton mask during raid in Walmer

A “public pest” burglar was snared after removing his skeleton mask disguise while raiding a pharmacy for drugs.

Heroin addict Chay Lenthall, who has 21 convictions for 48 offences, was given a sharp trouncing at Canterbury Crown Court for his wild behaviour.

Judge Mark Weekes said: “To put it bluntly, you are a pest to the public.

“I judge you attempt to minimise your own culpability and blame others – I believe you are still in denial.

“You need to stop moaning and face your responsibilities.

“You are approaching 40 years old, you need to grow up and get a grip of yourself.”

His stinging judgement came after Lenthall, a father of four, blamed his latest feeble criminal attempts on owing money for drugs.

Sweating profusely, the heavy-set 36-year-old sat open mouthed in the dock, occasionally nodding during Judge Weekes' scalding.

The court heard the benefit claimant, of Freeman Way in Deal, began his latest spree by shoplifting £260 of gin from Deal Sainsbury’s on July 15.

Lenthall, who is known to the police, was soon recognised on CCTV and later arrested.

Benefit claimant Lenthall then donned gloves and a skeleton mask then smashed into Walmer Pharmacy in Dover Road with a hammer at 1am on September 3.

The would-be-thief may have got away with the £200 drugs haul – if only he had not removed his mask.

Martin Lahiffe, prosecuting said: “CCTV showed he smashed the window with a hammer then climbs in.

“Mr Lenthall then lifts his mask and reveals his face. The CCTV is given to the police and they identify him.”

Defending, Ian Foinette said his client was successfully recovering from a long-term heroin and crack addiction.

“He ended up committing the break-in at the pharmacy because he was under pressure from people he owed money for drugs,” he said.

The barrister added Lenthall stood a chance of recovery if he was given a final chance.

Judge Weekes jailed Lenthall for 41 weeks suspended for two years.

He must also complete 20 rehabilitation days and a six month curfew.
