Survivors and relatives of those who died in the Zeebrugge ferry
disaster 25 years ago attended a special service in Dover on
Tuesday.

More than 250 people filled St Mary's Church for the
service.

They were able to leave memories of their loved ones for a Book
of Remembrance which is being compiled, and stars were used to
provide a lasting legacy of memories to those who died when
the Herald of Free Enterprise capsized, on March 6, 1987.

Family and friends of victims as well as anyone affected by the
disaster were able to record their feelings on the stars as part of
the service to mark the anniversary of the disaster.

The sermon, with the theme Peace Be
Still, was given by the Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev
Trevor Willmott (pictured left).

Among those attending was the Admiral the Lord Boyce, the Lord
Warden of the Cinque Ports, as well as civic dignitories including
the Mayor of Dover, Cllr Ronnie Philpott and district council
chairman, Cllr Sue Nicholas.

A total of 193 people died. Their names, which are already
included on a Roll of Honour below a stained glass window
commemorating the event at the church, were read out during the
service.

A Remembrance Candle was lit by Andrew Parker (pictured above),
the passenger who formed a human bridge by laying down across a gap
on the ferry so other passengers could crawl across him to safety.
He was later awarded the George Medal for his bravery. Mr Parker
also read a lesson at the service.

Muffled peals of bells rang before the service and this
evening. Among the bellringers is a P&O Ferries employee, four
people who took part in the muffled ringing at the time of the
tragedy, and retired school teacher whose pupils lost close family
members.

Tomorrow morning, another muffled quarter peal will be rung as a
reminder of the scenes in the town on the following
morning.

A new memorial has been created on Dover
seafront with 25 white rose bushes having been planted in an area
in front of the Gateway Flats, one for each year since the
disaster.

Relatives then went to the Prince of Wales Pier to also cast
wreaths and flowers into the sea.
