More on KentOnline
It’s been just over a year since Labour took office, and I think it’s worth taking a step back and looking at what we’ve achieved in that time.
I was elected to bring change to Dover and Deal and that’s exactly what I’ve been working hard to do.
After years of neglect, we’re finally seeing investment flow into our public services, our infrastructure, and our communities.
Better schools for every child
Through the Condition Improvement Fund, £470 million was designated for local schools – part of a record breaking £1.2 billion which Labour has dedicated to schools and education being improved over their time in office.
Fixing roofs, upgrading heating systems, and creating better learning environments.
It means children and teachers can focus on education, not leaky classrooms.
Protecting and improving bus services
We’ve secured £54 million for bus services across Kent – protecting vital routes and keeping our communities connected.
That funding is helping sustain services like the 64 route, and we’re piloting a new St Margaret’s service to better link rural villages to the town.
Helping the NHS recover
Labour’s New Deal for GPs is already making a difference, with more investment, less red tape, and extra doctors recruited to expand local capacity.
Patients in Dover and Deal are seeing shorter waits and more face-to-face appointments, and the return of blood testing at Deal Hospital means essential care is once again closer to home.
Tackling homelessness and supporting local services
We’ve delivered £1.4 million in homelessness prevention funding for Dover district, helping people into safe accommodation and supporting those most at risk.
This investment gives local councils the tools they need to intervene early and keep families secure.
Safer streets and stronger policing
Residents have welcomed the expansion of the Safer Streets initiative, which is funding more police on the ground and improving lighting and CCTV in key areas.
Local officers tell me this has already helped deter anti-social behaviour and strengthen community trust.
Working with the Port of Dover
I’ve been working closely with the Port of Dover to ensure a smooth transition to the Entry/Exit System (EES).
Together we’re tackling operational challenges and keeping trade and travel flowing – protecting thousands of local jobs tied to the port economy.
Delivering nationally, too
Across Britain, Labour has delivered record NHS appointments.
The economy is growing faster than any other in the G7, proof that stability and fairness go hand in hand.
After years of chaos, our immigration system is working again – with a renewed returns agreement ensuring that those with no right to remain are returned swiftly and humanely.

I’ve seen this progress first hand now that I am in the Home office, and I am personally working harder then ever to deliver on safer more secure borders and a stronger immigration system for the Britian.
From better schools and stronger GP services to safer streets and a growing economy, Labour is delivering for the whole country and I am doing my best to make sure Dover and Deal feel the effects of that.
