Shortly afterwards three men, all white and wearing dark tracksuits with the hoods up and the drawstrings pulled tightly around their faces, were seen running from the shop towards the junction with Canada Road.

Detective Constable Rob Goodban said: "We would like to hear from anyone who saw the incident or the three men either before or after the burglary.

"We would also like to hear from anyone in the area who has been offered cigarettes for sale."

He urged shops and cafes to ensure their charity boxes were kept secure.

"The most effective way to do this is to chain them to counters during opening hours and to keep them locked away in a safe place when businesses close," he said.
