West Malling: Where to go and what to do

West Malling, or Town Malling as it is also known, has been attracting people from all walks of life since the times of the Domesday Book.

First it was the Normans who came to build their stronghold, St Leonard’s Tower, and let the Saxons know exactly who was boss.

Over the years, those French invaders have been followed by everyone from Benedictine nuns and hop pickers (who came in their thousands every summer), to the artist JMW Turner and the biggest band the world has ever known.

Yes, even The Beatles came to West Malling – 50 years ago this year – to film their ground-breaking movie the Magical Mystery Tour. Today’s visitors may not have the star quality as the Fab Four but they will leave just as impressed.

The farmer's market takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month

Don’t miss: The vibrant farmers’ market is on the fourth Sunday of every month. The stalls take over the middle of the picturesque High Street, bringing the town to a standstill for much of the day. Once you’ve loaded up with the local bangers, veg and cakes, allow enough time for lunch in one of the many pubs, cafes and restaurants – there’s plenty to pick from.

Take time to explore: A short stroll from the High Street or train station, everybody loves Manor Park. Once part of a 18th century estate, nature has reclaimed much of the land and today there are plenty of hidden corners to explore in the 52 acres. Stroll by the lake or take the children to the play area where there are picnic tables and plenty of green space for ball games. The park is open from 9am to dusk.

Best-kept secret: Head up the High Street towards St Mary’s Church. Cut through the graveyard, drop down Churchfields past the tightly-packed terraced houses. Here, away from the bustle of the town, is the Scared Crow, a gem of a pub which serves Mexican dishes that have a real zing. The food may be big on quality but the pub is short on space, so it’s best to book. Go to www.scaredcrow.co.uk

Getting there: The mainline station is a five minute walk or so from the centre of West Malling. A short drive from Junction 4 of the M20, the main pay and display car park is just off the High Street. However, at weekends the car park opposite the Bull Inn is free.
