Apprentice Tommy Tyrer becomes trainer at John Eaton's painting and decorating firm proving apprenticeships do work

An apprenticeship scheme has been so successful for a painter and decorator that he and his apprentice have gone into partnership.

John Eaton, of John - Local Decorator & Team, started teaching Tommy Tyrer his trade when he was 16 years-old and fresh from school.

Tommy is now coming up to 20 and, as a fully qualified painter and decorator, he is picking up the mantle as trainer himself.

Mr Eaton said: "With Tommy’s continued hard work, professionalism, dedication, and gained experience within the business, Tommy is now part of my management team.

"He is now running traineeship programmes for young people for future careers within the painting and decorating industry, by helping them become work-ready.

"He is a simply a real asset to the business."

Last year the firm was voted small business of the year 2019.

It turned out to be a double award winning year where Tommy scooped apprentice of the year.

Mr Eaton has since purchased Tommy a vehicle through the business, meaning they can now take on two more young apprentices and bring in more work.

Mr Eaton added: "Apprenticeships really do work".
