New research names the White Cliffs of Dover, Kent as the 12th most beautiful walk in the UK.

The study is by the outdoor clothes and equipment suppliers Millets.

Its researchers looked at Tripadvisor reviews which included the words “beautiful”, “pretty” and “picturesque” to reveal the most attractive walks in Britain.

A spokesman for Millets said: "We’ve looked at walks of all types and lengths, including everything from short ambles on the beach to challenging hikes."

The White Cliffs had 687 such reviews and was the only Kent location in a list of 50 best walks.

Number one was Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, followed by the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland and then the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol.

The White Cliffs stretch from Capel-le-Ferne all the way to Kingsdown and are split by the Dour Valley, which contains Dover town centre.

It is the Langdon section that is particularly world famous as it is usually the first distinctive sight of England for those sailing from the Continent.

This was particularly symbolic for troops coming home during the Second World War.

Dame Vera Lynn famously namechecked them with her wartime song (There'll Be Bluebirds Over (The White Cliffs of Dover).

To honour this a clifftop meadow was last month named after her as well as the footpath leading from behind Dover Eastern Docks to the cliff top.

France can be seen from the cliffs on a clear day and they also provide stunning views such as of Dover Harbour and Shakespeare Cliff to the south and St Margaret's-at-Cliffe to the north.

Walking can be safely done in the evening by sticking to the the main path going all the way to the Coastguard Station, which is far away from the cliff edge. Some light is also provided by Dover Eastern Docks.
