Andrew Brown from Dover jailed for harassing ex-partner and stealing from her

A father has been jailed for six months after harassing his ex-partner and stealing £40 from her.

Andrew Brown, 27, was convicted of the charges after a trial before magistrates and was committed to Canterbury Crown Court for sentence.

Edmund Fowler said Brown had been in a relationship for four years and had a young daughter. Problems arose shortly after the birth because of his behaviour and his partner’s post natal depression.

On May 3, 2017 Brown turned up at his ex-partner’s house in Dover in the early hours and said he was going to be shot and wanted to see his daughter for the last time.

He took his ex-partner’s phone and £40 which fell out of her pocket and then bombarded her with calls saying he would beat her up and have her stabbed, her house burned down and her dog put down.

The following day his ex-partner dropped their daughter off at Brown’s mother’s house. When she returned to pick up her daughter Brown refused to hand her over.

His family returned his daughter to her mother.

Interviewed by police Brown said his ex-partner had made up the allegations because he had a new girlfriend. He denied making threats to her.

Brown had one previous conviction for failing to surrender to bail.

'You told police she had invented it all because she was jealous. What a cowardly man you are'

Tom Dunn, defending, said Brown was guilty of unpleasant behaviour over three days.

He added that Brown had had a difficult childhood which had affected his ability to relate to the outside world.

“He has a problem with alcohol and is taking some faltering steps to deal with it,” Mr Dunn said.

Judge Rupert Lowe told Brown: “You arrived at your ex-partner’s house saying you were going to be shot. This was an alarming thing for someone to hear in the early hours.

“You were bullying her and bossing her around and this was violent, manipulative behaviour towards the mother of your child. You made 21calls threatening to stab her and burn the house down.

“You knew all the buttons to push to terrify this young woman. You told police she had invented it all because she was jealous. What a cowardly man you are.You left her too scared and anxious to go out in case she saw you.”

Brown was also given a 10-year restraining order banning him from contacting his ex-partner save for child contact reasons via a solicitor or third party.
