Damaged ferry in for repairs

A NORFOLKLINE ferry is undergoing repairs in dry dock at Zeebrugge this week after suffering what was described as minor damage in a collision with the harbour wall at the Eastern Docks last Thursday.

The Dawn Merchant, which was only introduced on the cross-Channel route in September, was leaving the harbour when it hit the wall, causing damage to its side.

Initial reports that it had been holed and was taking on water proved to be false, and no sea water got into the ship.

However, a water main used for fire-fighting operations burst in the impact, and that water had to be pumped out by the ship's crew. A Dover fire crew was also called to the scene as a precautionary measure.

The ship returned to number one berth, alongside the Eastern Arm, where the damage was inspected, and all the cargo, vehicles and passengers were unloaded and transferred to other ships. The Dawn Merchant sailed to Zeebrugge that night so that repairs could be made.

A full enquiry is taking place into the cause of the accident.
