East Kent Freemasons gives Easter eggs to intensive care unit staff at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford

Staff at William Harvey Hospital received a sweet treat for the Easter Weekend thanks to Freemasons in Dover and businesses in Folkestone and Ashford.

Aspiring member Charlie Miller delivered over £350 worth of Easter Eggs to the intensive care unit on behalf of East Kent Freemasons.

Although Charlie is not yet a Freemason, his membership is pending at the Snargate Lodge in Dover having been delayed due to coronavirus social distancing measures.

Charlie, a HGV driver for a recycling company, was discussing the plight of an intensive care nurse he knowswith a member of the Lodge in Dover and the seeds were sewn for a generous donation.

He told the member he was going to donate some money to by treats for the staff at the hospital.

Within a day, members of Snargate lodge and Military Jubilee Chapter decided to back him with donations.

He also gained the support of Tesco in Folkestone and Ashford.

Charlie, who lives in Peen Nr Folkestone, said: "My friend's wife is an intensive care nurse at Ashford, and she is working to a demanding schedule, so it seemed appropriate that a little something may bring some light relief."

He is drawn to the charity and friendship side of side of the Freemasons organisation and was due to join the Branch in May which will be rearranged when the ban on mass gatherings is lifted.

Phil Heath, the branch's press spokesman, said: "No doubt Charlie will make a great Freemason, like many Individuals from all over Kent doing something to help during the Coronavirus."
