P&O Ferries says the fuel situation in France is improving

The fuel situation in France is improving, according to P&O Ferries.

Head of communications, Dan Bridgett, claims media reports of shortages is at odds with the "trouble-free" picture the ferry company is seeing on the ground.

This comes after a national day of strike action in France yesterday (Thursday), halted aircraft and trains, with fuel supplies disrupted after days of protests.

Workers unhappy with planned reforms to employment laws blockaded fuel refineries.

Many people who plan to head across the Channel for half term, are being urged to stock up in Kent before they travel.

However, Mr Bridgett said: “We are operating a full schedule of sailings to Calais today and our advice to customers is to enjoy driving in France as usual over the Bank Holiday weekend.

"The fuel situation is continuing to improve and media reports about shortages are at odds with the relatively trouble-free picture we are seeing on the ground.

"Customers should also be aware that P&O Ferries now allows drivers to bring up to five litres of spare fuel on board with them, provided it is in an approved container.”

The AA said it has received several calls from motorists needing help after 1,600 petrol stations shut across the country.

Six of France's eight refineries closed as a result of industrial action, with activists holding protests outside.
