Cllr Graham Wanstall proposes renaming Dover Eastern Docks for Queen's Platinum Jubilee

Dover Eastern Docks should be renamed for the Platinum Jubilee and a road should be christened after the Queen.

These are two of a series of proposals being put forward by a town councillor to mark the 70th anniversary of her reign.

The ideas will be heard at a full Dover District Council meeting next Wednesday.

Cllr Wanstall, of Dover Town Council, said in a written submission, that he wanted to rename the Eastern Docks Jubilee Eastern Docks "so the whole world will remember the Jubilee when travelling."

The second idea is to name Castle Hill Road, from its junction with Victoria Park to Upper Road, Queen Elizabeth II Hill.

Cllr Wanstall stresses that the busy stretch of road next to Dover Castle has no residents to consult.

Thirdly he wants a commemorative clock at Pencester Gardens by the bus station to replace one removed about five years ago.

The fourth idea is to relight the Dover Town Hall clock, as it had been until about 40 years ago, with a plaque explaining why it is lit again.

The fifth proposal is to have one or two slabs imprinted into the pavements in front of the War Memorial and/or Market Square to show the crown etc and the relevant 70 years.

Cll Wanstall explains that this was done in Canterbury in 1977 for the Silver Jubilee and the imprints are still there.

He commented to the council: " Will you please give these constructive proposals serious consideration as time is now short?"

The Queen took the throne on February 6, 1952 and the special Bank Holiday to celebrate the anniversary is on June 2 and 3 this year.

Cllr Wanstall represents the Town and Castle ward, which includes the Eastern Docks and town centre.

He has regularly put forward proposals to rename places after much-loved public figures or to commemorate local tragedies.

In 2019 he succeeded in having a plaque placed for the victims of the 1977 Crypt Restaurant fire at Bench Street, in which seven people were killed.

He had successfully campaigned to get the footpath from Athol Terrace to the top of the White Cliffs at Langdon after Dame Vera Lynn.

This happened with both the path and a meadow on the cliff top last summer.

But his proposal last year to rename Market Square Queen Elizabeth II Square and the Townwall Street underpass Prince Philip Way were not taken up.

The full Dover District Council meetings is at its headquarters at the White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield, from 6pm next Wednesday.
