Residents encouraged to have their say on consultation into Dover Gateway

Residents are being urged to have their say on the future of Dover Gateway.

Kent County Council claims the centre in Castle Street is not good value for money and is considering moving the services to Dover Discovery Centre, which is owned by the council.

KCC claims that the low footfall for its services means the authority is losing money due to building costs of up to £559,000.

Dover District Council has covered the annual property costs in full from 2009 to 2016.

Should a decision be taken to retain KCC services in the Gateway, KCC will be required to pay a 50% contribution towards the property costs, which would be around £32,410 a year.

At present, it provides services including a health trainer service, Life Choice Independent Living, occupational therapy, Kent Supported Employment, blue badge assessments, Community Wardens, smoking cessation, Hi Kent and general enquiries.

The services that KCC provides will not change, but it is possible that these would need to be accessed from alternative locations from August, 2017.

A 12-week consultation started in March and finishes on Sunday, June 12.

A decision is expected to be made in July.
