Young girl subjected to alleged rape ordeal in Folkestone and Dover tells court she feared she would be killed if she raised alarm

A young girl subjected to an alleged rape ordeal by three men has told a court she feared she would be killed if she tried to shout for help.

The child says those accused of plying her with drugs and passing her around “like a receptacle” for their sexual gratification warned her she would be “hurt” if she attempted to raise the alarm.

Ivan Turtak, Kevin Horvath and Ernest Gunar are all on trial at Canterbury Crown Court, where prosecutors allege they targeted the youngster in an Asda car park before abusing her at a flat in Dover and a caravan in Folkestone.

The jury has been shown video recordings of the girl’s interviews with police, during which she was asked to relive what had reportedly happened to her.

Crying, with her hands held to her face, biting her nails and her leg shaking, she could barely answer a series of questions put to her in what was the first of three interviews.

At times, she paused for several seconds before responding, while in other moments, officers were met with silence or a shake of her head.

At one stage, having said she wanted to go home, she was allowed a break and left the police room so she could speak to her mum.

But as the camera continued recording, sounds of what the prosecution said were her distress were captured as she was reassured and encouraged to talk to officers.

Thereafter, and over the course of two further interviews, she went on to detail how she was allegedly given drugs and subjected to rape and other sexual acts by Turtak, Horvath and Gunar.

She was "scared, terrified and worried", she told detectives.

The court heard that although her accounts varied, the "core of the allegations ran throughout" - that the defendants "targeted, exploited and passed her around" for their sexual gratification, said prosecutor Hannah Llewellyn-Waters.

Turtak, 38, from Dover, denies rape but has admitted taking an indecent photo of the girl standing naked in his bath.

Horvath, 25 and also from Dover, is on trial accused of sexual assault of a child but has pleaded guilty to three charges of rape and one of assault by penetration.

Gunar, 27 and from Folkestone, denies assault of a child by penetration, sexual assault of a child, and two offences of rape. He has, however, admitted one charge of rape.

The jury heard all three were "complete strangers" to the youngster.

Turtak and Horvath were the first she met as she walked alone across an Asda supermarket car park.

Having caught her attention with a wave, she was then encouraged to get into Horvath's Skoda with the promise of a cigarette.

But once in the back seat, Horvath drove off, taking her first to Turtak's flat and then to a caravan belonging to Gunar.

The court heard she was abused at both locations and also in the car.

When the youngster was finally located by police, she was not wearing her own clothes and tests revealed traces of crystal meth and THC - the breakdown product of cannabis - in her system.

She did not initially reveal her ordeal but soon told her parents she had been "raped by men" and went on to say - falsely, the jury was told - that she had been abducted from a park.

Police were then alerted to the rape complaint and an interview arranged.

The court heard the girl's mum later described her daughter as being petrified before it got underway and how she just "clammed up".

But despite being told by an officer that it was her opportunity to say what had happened, the youngster's reaction was to reply "I can't" and start to cry, clenching her hands together and to her face.

Encouragement to "take her time" and to "just have a chat" were met with sniffles or silence.

She then detailed being in a park in Dover before falling quiet. Asked if she was OK, she mumbled before adding: "I want to go home."

It was at this point she was given a break and allowed to see her mum.

The youngster was "clinging to her mother and distressed", Ms Llewellyn-Waters told the jury.

The interview resumed but again questions were met with silence and a shoulder shrug.

When told by police that they could take it "in small chunks if it's easier for you", the girl replied: "None of it is easy for me."

Several more questions followed but nothing was divulged and the process was brought to an end.

It was in her second interview, conducted an hour later, that she began to reveal how she had met two men in the Asda car park before being driven to the flat and caravan.

She admitted she had not gone to a park as she had claimed. When asked her reason for having said that, she told the officer: "Because I got in the car voluntarily and I thought if I done that, nothing would happen to the men."

The girl then detailed her encounters with the three defendants, telling police: "I was walking past Asda and then the car pulled up and they asked if I wanted a fag and I said 'Yeah'.

"They said 'Get in the car and I'll roll it for you'. I got in the car and he (Horvath) started driving and I said 'Where are we going?' and he said 'Don't worry about it. We are just going for a drive', and I said 'OK'."

The Skoda eventually pulled up outside Turtak's flat where, she told police, having gone inside, he gave her cocaine to snort and a pipe to smoke.

She then described how he took her by the hand into a bedroom and forced her to perform a sex act on him before telling her to "shower".

There was no shower, however, just a bath with a pot beside it, which she used to tip the water over herself.

I was walking past Asda and then the car pulled up and they asked if I wanted a fag and I said 'Yeah'...

The naked image of her was later found in Turtak's possession after his arrest.

The youngster said Horvath - who she described as "the skinny man" - then picked them up and "dropped off" Turtak, who could not speak English, before she was taken to Folkestone.

While in the car she said she was offered a bottle of drink, which she thought was lemonade.

Asked about its contents and how it made her feel, she said: "It didn't really have a taste. I got really tired and I couldn't sit up."

Once in Folkestone, Horvath met up with Gunar, who she described as "the fat man", and he took them to his caravan in Arthur Street.

There, she said, she was given the drug pipe again, as well as gummies - which she said she thought to be ecstasy - before being repeatedly raped and abused.

The youngster also recalled that her clothes were removed after she refused a demand to take them off herself.

She described how she was then raped by Horvath before he “let the other man (Gunar) have a turn”.

Gunar then stopped and smoked cannabis before giving her some, she told police.

In the same interview, she explained how the two men ordered a kebab but did not give her anything to eat.

Having fallen asleep, she woke the next morning "feeling confused" and alleged that after being given "more weed" they raped her again, and engaged in other sexual activity.

"It was practically a repeat of the day before but we didn't go back to the flat," she added, describing how "the skinny" man had sex with her first and then Gunar "took his turn".

"How were you feeling?" she was asked by police. "I was scared," she replied.

She also told police that about 15 people had visited the caravan during her time there to buy drugs from Gunar.

Asked how she felt when the Skoda had driven off with her, she replied: "I was scared."

She also said the cocaine given to her by Turtak made her feel sick and that she was "terrified" when he took her in the bedroom.

She described his flat and the caravan in detail, how the gummies made her see "really bright colours", and that having removed her clothes, she had been given others to wear.

The girl said she was "frightened and worried" at this point, and had not said anything as the men took it in turns to rape her.

She initially claimed she had managed to flee the caravan as the two men slept but in a further interview told police how she escaped from a car after being driven to Turtak's flat again.

The girl also revealed how Horvath had driven to a car park in a residential area and had sex with her again.

Due to her being a child, cross-examination of her evidence by the three defence barristers was pre-recorded at an earlier court hearing and then also played to the jury on Wednesday.

For much of the time she was simply required to reply "Right" or "Wrong" to questions.

In response to Alexa Le Moine, defending Turtak, the girl denied telling him she was 20 years old or that she had helped herself to his drugs in the flat.

Visibly upset, she also maintained that he had taken his trousers down in the bedroom, forced her to perform a sex act on him and told her to shower.

I didn't want them to hurt me. They had suggested that if I were to try and get help they would hurt me...

Having said she did not remember Turtak taking a photo of her, she then denied asking him to do so.

When questioned by Ronnie Manek, defending Gunar, she denied telling him an inaccurate date of birth, and maintained he had given her drugs, abused and raped her.

She refuted the lawyer's suggestions that she had undressed herself and, while engaged in sex with Horvath, had "gestured" at Gunar to join them and then "chose" to also have sex with him.

Although she admitted she had not "shouted for help" at any time, she told the court it was because Gunar had threatened to kill her if she did.

The girl denied that she had "willingly" gone with Horvath and Gunar to a swimming pool and was "having fun" there.

She also maintained Gunar had accompanied her into the changing room and forced her to perform a sex act.

Asked about a social media post that spoke of telling lies, she replied it referred to a boy lying to her.

When questioned by Siobhan Molloy, defending Horvath, she again denied that she had told him she was 20 years old when she met him at Asda.

She also refuted that she had asked to go with them, as well as a suggestion that she had started kissing his neck while in the Skoda on the way to the caravan.

The court heard the youngster's phone, which she said she had last seen after leaving Turtak's flat, was found in Horvath's car after his arrest.

Asked by Ms Llewllyn-Waters about why she had not sought help while at the caravan or on other occasions, she replied: "I didn't want them to hurt me. They had suggested that if I were to try and get help they would hurt me."

Then, referring to a time she said Gunar and Horvath left her alone in the locked car after visiting a cafe, she added: "Because they had told me they were going to kill me before going to the cafe, I thought they would do the same thing if I tried (to shout for help)".

The trial continues.
