Lorry driver cleared of drug smuggling

AN AMBULANCE was called to Canterbury Crown Court today after a Spanish lorry driver slumped in the dock after being cleared of smuggling cannabis worth £1million into Dover.

Jose Romero-Garcia, 39, had been on trial for 13 days after being arrested at the docks on April 6 with 350kg of resin on his lorry. Customs officers found the drug stashed among pallets of sweets destined for Chichester.

Mr Romero-Garcia said he knew nothing about the 1,416 blocks of resin officers found in 10 cardboard boxes. After a medical examination, Mr Garcia-Romero left Canterbury to return home to Spain.
