Migrants risk lives to cross English Channel in boat fixed by 'parcel tape'

A small boat, fixed with what looks like parcel tape, is a horrifying reminder of how migrants are risking their lives to reach Britain.

This picture, supplied to KentOnline by Chris Johnson, is of a vessel that carried eight to 10 migrants who were brought into Dover this morning.

Mr Johnson, a shipping employee, says they were rescued off Dover by Border Force officials.

He said: "This is the most dangerous of boats to date."

He has shared video on his Facebook page showing the migrants being brought into the Port of Dover by a Border Force boat this morning.

One of the clips shows the arrivals and the officials looking after them wearing face masks as part of Covid-19 precautions. Presently migrants are quarantined for 14 days after arriving in Britain.

Natalie Elphicke, MP for Dover and Deal, said: “These ruthless traffickers have no regard for the safety of the people they squash into overcrowded, unseaworthy boats.

“That’s why every illegal entrant should be returned. Because these dangerous journeys will only stop when migrants and traffickers alike know that they won’t succeed.”

The Home Office confirmed a Border Force vessel intercepted a boat at 2.30am today carrying eight men.

The group said they were from Sudan and they will now been transferred to immigration officials.

A spokesman said: "They will be interviewed, and their cases will be dealt with in line with the immigration rules, transferring to detention where appropriate."

Meanwhile border officials are working to deport dozens of migrants after another three boats were stopped crossing the Channel en route to Britain on Sunday.

That took the weekend total to 90 migrants following nine landing attempts on Saturday.
