Her family had earlier announced on the CAWCA Facebook page, on September 19, that she was in hospital.

Mrs Amos, who was in her 80s, was a stalwart in the Dover community, being a leading figure in the registered charity for decades.

She singlehandedly ran the bookings and finance for Clarendon and Westbury Community Centre in Belgrave Road.

CAWCA chairman Keith Sansum said: "Sheila was the community association.

"Wherever there were issues, Sheila was the one who locals turned to.

"I worked closely with Sheila over many years both in local and political circles.

"She was a real fighter and the area will sorely miss her."

Mrs Amos had first joined CAWCA in the 1990s and had also been a member of the Priory Forum community group.

She was also a Labour Dover town councillor from 2007 to 2015.

Sheila Amos was a widow who is survived by two sons.

Dover mayor Gordon Cowan said: "When Sheila served as a town councillor she was dedicated to her role serving the community to the full."

Cllr Cowan acknowledged her role in CAWCA and added: "She worked tirelessly for the community and will be sorely missed."

CAWCA is a thriving residents' group formed in 1988.

It deals with a range of issues in the neighbourhood, the former Priory council ward area.

These include provision of facilities such as children's play areas, litter and crime and vandalism.

Its committee regularly liaises with groups such as local police and councillors.

Its hall has for years been a success, with high demand for bookings.

Group using it include the Belgrave Pre-School and martial arts and youth clubs.

It also has successful bingo nights on Saturdays.

Mr Sansum said he had immediately taken over the main running of the hall and its bookings.

A new treasurer and volunteers are being sought in the long term.

Mrs Amos' funeral takes place at Barham Crematorium at 2pm on Wednesday, October 23.
