Each man in this event, the Channel Medley Relay 2022, will take on a different recognised strokes and swim their hour before handing over to the next.

They are likely to start from Shakespeare Beach, repeating their sequences until they get to France.

Mr Hammond will go first, using the backstroke followed by Mr Waite on the breast stroke, third will be Mr Papougnet on the butterfly and last will be Mr Henderson doing the front crawl.

This will be the second only attempt to cross the English Channel in this medley format and if successful, these four will break a record by being the only all-male team to do it like this.

The only successful crossing so far was on September 18, 2010, where a mixed team managed a fast time of 11 hours 29 minutes.

The aim of these four is to raise money for the Alexa Trust, a charity supporting parents with babies in neonatal units.

It was set up in memory of Alexa James, a baby girl who died after being born premature and fragile in 2015.

The exact date for the swim is to be confirmed and is dependent on the weather.

Mr Hammond and Mr Papougnet are both from Walmer, Mr Waite is from Kingsdown and Mr Henderson from St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.
