A section of a key road is being closed this weekend as work to prepare for a new rapid bus route continues.

There will be a full lane shutdown eastbound on the A2 between the A256 Whitfield roundabout and the A256 Whitfield interchange.

This starts on Saturday from 9pm and goes on until 5am next day.

Dover District Council says this is essential work to extend the narrow lanes out on the A2 eastbound.

A diversion to bypass the closed section of road will direct traffic through the White Cliffs Business Park at Honeywood Parkway, Whitfield.

A Dover District Council (DDC) spokesman said: "Please ensure we aim to minimise any inconvenience as much as possible and thank you for your patience and co-operation while these works are ongoing."

Dover Fastrack is a rapid bus transit system connecting Whitfield with Dover town centre and Dover Priory railway station.

It will become Kent's first zero emission bus service with the use of new electric-powered vehicles.

The buses will have priority on a proposed express route.

The project includes a new bus, cycle and pedestrian-only bridge across the A2 at Whitfield and a new link road from the B&Q roundabout in Whitfield to Dover Road at Guston.

The junction with Dover Road will be for buses, bicycles and pedestrians only.

Kent County Council is managing delivery of the project on behalf of DDC.

The scheme is backed by central government with £22.9 million from a funding programme designed to help stimulate new housing development at Whitfield and the former Connaught Barracks site.

Construction work began in February and is expected to take 18 months.

The route is planned to includes a new 1km road connecting the Whitfield Urban Expansion to the Tesco roundabout at Honeywood Parkway.

This is via a new overbridge over the A2, and a new 1.1km road connecting the B&Q roundabout on Honeywood Parkway to Dover Road, near Frith Farm at Guston.

Members of the public can get updates and information on the project via public drop-in sessions at the site offices of the main contractors Colas Ltd off the Tesco Roundabout, at Honeywood Parkway.

These are from noon to 2pm on the Wednesdays of September 28, October 26 and November 30.
