An eyewitness said there had been a couple of people who jumped into the water and the lifeboat was also involved in the search.

A coastguard spokeswoman said: "HM Coastguard was called at 12.45pm today to assist after a report of a person in the water at Dover Harbour.

"An RNLI lifeboat from Dover has been sent along with coastguard rescue teams from Langdon and Folkestone and the coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd.

"Kent police and local vessels are also at the scene and assisting."
