Unsafe structure cordoned off by police at Dover seafront

A structure was cordoned off by officers as a spike dangled in mid-air.

Some of the benches on the seafront at Dover were surrounded by cones and police tape to stop people getting too close.

Officers and builders were seen at the scene today securing the unsafe structure.

The spike was sitting off the top of the pavilion-like seating area but by this afternoon it had been removed.

The cordon has also been removed and the benches reopened as the structure is now safe.

A spokesman for the Port of Dover said: "The Port of Dover was made aware of an issue with the mast of the most easterly sundial shelter on the seafront at Sunday lunchtime.

"It was immediately cordoned off by Port of Dover police and the port’s engineering team attended with a crane and other plant to safely remove the mast while police assisted with traffic management.

"The area was reopened by 4.30pm.”

Police has been contacted for more information.
