A man being chased by police climbed a tree in an attempt to avoid arrest.

Police officers in Dover were forced to play a waiting game while the man refused to come down from the branches yesterday afternoon.

The suspect, who was wanted by the Metropolitan Police, set up shop in the foliage above Folkestone Road at around 12.28.

Two fire engines were also called to the scene, but were not needed as officers eventually managed to talk the suspect down after almost three hours.

A police spokesman said in a statement shared on twitter: "This afternoon Dover CPT officers located a male wanted by the Metropolitan Police in Lewisham.

"Following a foot chase he climbed a tree in Folkestone Road and had to be negotiated to come down.

"He eventually came down and is now in custody."

A spokesman later said: "The area around the tree was cordoned off as a precaution. The man climbed down without incident and was arrested by officers."

The Met Police has been asked to comment.
