Officers say the suspect is described as a white man in his 40s wearing a black or grey tracksuit.

They say they have carried out a number of inquiries, including reviewing CCTV footage.

Investigators are now urging witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police to come forward.

The tunnels were built during the Napoleonic Wars, and the outbreak of the Second World War saw the tunnels converted first into an air-raid shelter and then later into a military command centre and underground hospital.

Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay directed the evacuation of French and British soldiers from Dunkirk, code-named Operation Dynamo, from the cliff tunnels in May 1940.

Anyone who witnessed what happened is urged to call police on 01843 222289, quoting 46/57568/25.
