A new ‘ferry’ service will launch next month offering passengers a “unique and environmentally friendly” way of crossing the Channel.
Called SailLink, it will carry up to 12 passengers with luggage and bicycles from Dover to Boulogne on a 56ft catamaran.
The new service is the brainchild of founder and director Andrew Simons whose team first introduced the concept in 2022 - testing the waters with a sail boat, while evaluating journey times, feasibility and formalising border procedures.
Now the company has acquired a new craft, called Echoes, which bosses say offers more comfort and speed for passengers and will have an experienced, qualified crew.
Its maiden crossing from Dover marina will be on Saturday, April 5, returning the following day.
The total travel time remains weather dependent but is estimated at about four hours.
While that is longer than a traditional ferry crossing, SailLink says the experience will be far more engaging and a greener alternative to a smoke-belching, diesel-powered ferry.
"Developing this venture has been one small step after the other, made together with many other people and partners and now we’re just at the start,” says Mr Simons.
“SailLink is for all those who want a bit of adventure in their travels, but also just a future-friendly and convenient connection across the Channel.
“Whether you're hiking the Pilgrim Way, cycling a EuroVelo route, going to a foreign town for a weekend or just want to experience sailing without the commitment, SailLink is here to enable it.
“Of course, there will be times when the weather is against us and a crossing would simply be too uncomfortable for passengers.
“On those occasions, we might have to cancel at short notice or delay the crossing until conditions improve so there has to be a degree of flexibility built into travellers’ plans.”
Passengers are encouraged to spend their time on deck, under the shelter of a canopy if needed, to gain the full experience of being at sea and reduce the likelihood of seasickness.
They will even have the opportunity to try their hand at helping to sail the boat, which does have a pair of electric motors for manoeuvring in harbours.
But there is no restaurant, bar or duty free shop, with refreshments limited to light snacks, coffee, tea, biscuits and water.
In France, the Echoes will dock in Boulogne marina, giving passengers quick access to the town and its shops and restaurants.
“There’s a lot going on in Boulogne this year and it could make an ideal short stay over,” added Mr Simons.
Single crossings cost £85 but SailLink stresses the unique experience the crossing offers.
The aim is to run the service from Easter to October. Visit www.saillink.co.uk for more information, the full schedule and bookings.
