Families and residents get trapped in queues at Dover

Families on the way to their summer getaway have been left trapped in their cars this morning amid traffic chaos in Dover.

Cars and lorries are queuing for miles along the M20 and A20 on approach to the town, with queues also backing up on the A2.

Watch: Travellers get stuck in Dover traffic

Roads in the centre of Dover, including Maison Dieu Road, are at a standstill, with residents having to reportedly abandon their vehicles to get to work.

Thomas Dunn, his wife Christella and teenage son Callan, of Kilkenny in Ireland, were left helpless in their car in Folkestone Road.

The snarl-up there was further complicated by three cars trying to get out of the Clarendon Road junction.

Mr Dunn said: "We have moved half a kilometre in an hour and a half.

"Thankfully we have plenty of water in the boot of our car."

Another stuck driver said they'd been moving "an average of 25m an hour".

Artur Majchrzyk and his wife and children, from Poland, were trapped in their car in York Street.

He said: "We left Felixstowe at 4am and the journey to Dover should have taken 2 1/2 hours.

"This has now added just over three hours.

"I am now getting very tired. What is causing this?"

Schubert Hendrick was stuck in York Street and was heading home from Germany after a holiday in Sussex.

He said: "I am very tired and angry. We have moved 70km in four hours. What is causing this?"

Hannah Pappenberger, from Reading, was stuck in York Street and described the situation as 'ridiculous'.

A young woman lorry driver from Romanian, also stuck in York Street, added: "I came from Gravesend and I have been delayed by six hours.

"This is very bad and I don't know why it's happened."

A Dover resident, who spoke to our reporter in the town centre, was on his way to a funeral at Buckland.

He said: "I've given up on the car and I'm catching the bus. This happens too often."

The Port of Dover declared a 'critical incident' this morning as border issues gridlock the town and its surrounding roads.

Delays of more than four hours are expected.

Stagecoach says it can't access the town, and residents trying to get to work are having to walk or find alternative routes.

A crash on the M20 near Folkestone has also caused delays on the motorway.
